A Brief History of Our Church

Saint Sava Church · Greensborough, Melbourne

Serbian Orthodox Church Community of Saint Sava was established in 1952 by the first wave of Serbian migrants who came to Melbourne after the Second World War.

Their noble aim was to remain connected to their ancestral Serbian Orthodox roots, to preserve faith, language, and culture for generations to come.

Initially, the church community used various churches and halls until 1963, when they renovated an existing church in Carlton North that served as their home for the next 35 years.

During this period, the parish purchased land in Greensborough, 23 km north-east of Melbourne, and over two decades prepared a new place to call home, with the Church of St Sava as their center of prayer and worship.

Today, the Serbian Orthodox Church Community of Saint Sava is the central meeting place for Serbian Orthodox Christians and others in the northern suburbs of Melbourne.
